puppy parties

We believe that any animal lover, from 1 to 100, should be able to be surrounded by “puppies” on their special day! Secondhand Hounds will bring at least 3 puppies or dogs to your business, home, venue, convention, or virtually for 90 minutes of play!

With limited exceptions, all in person puppy parties must take place within 30 miles of our Minnetonka office.

Thank you for your support in providing puppy socialization, spreading the word about animal rescue and helping us raise money for our program!

There are three types of Puppy Parties available, please read below for more info on each of the options. Due to COVID-19, restrictions may apply. Outdoor parties can only take place when temperatures are between 50-85 degrees.

Puppy Party FAQs

What is a puppy party?

A Puppy Party is just that – a party with PUPPIES! Secondhand Hounds volunteers and fosters bring at least 3 puppies to your business, office, personal or corporate event. For 90 minutes the guests at the party have the opportunity to learn about rescue, what an adoption process might look like, and hold adorable puppies!

What's in it for the puppies?

They get socialized and learn how to be around other people, which is very important for growth so they will be ready to be adopted! We want the puppies to explore the world (safely, in a controlled environment) and meet new people. We also love to talk about animal rescue!

What all comes along to the puppy party? Who brings the puppies?

Each puppy party will be supervised by at least 2 experienced puppy volunteers. They will bring the following to the party:

  • Cleaning supplies for accidents
  • Puppy pen to keep the puppies in
  • Treats, toys, water dish
  • Puppy pads/newspaper
  • 3-5 puppies!
Sometimes the foster family or another volunteer may transport the puppies to the party. The SHH volunteers at the party are asked to set up the puppy area, ensure puppies are taken care of and rotated among guests, answer questions about Secondhand Hounds, and clean up! Puppies are typically 6-8 weeks old but may be up to one year of age.

How do you manage play time with the pups at large parties?

For larger parties, we recommend timed shifts in small groups or stanchions to form a line. This ensures each person gets a chance with the pups! We generally recommend 5-10 minute shifts with 10-15 people at a time depending on the number of puppies.

How long is the puppy party?

At this time, our maximum puppy party length is 90 minutes. Puppies are typically only 6 – 8 weeks old for these parties, so we need to keep that in mind because longer parties can overwhelm them.

Where does the puppy party take place?

The puppy party must take place in a confined area, safe for the animals. We will bring a puppy pen to hold the puppies. Puppies cannot be in public spaces without being inside a puppy pen or held, and must be separate from other dogs to protect their health. With limited exceptions, all in person puppy parties must take place within 30 miles of our Minnetonka office. If you live outside of Minnesota, please consider hosting a Virtual Puppy Party!

What if someone meets a puppy and wants to adopt that day?

The adoption process starts by the guest filling out an application on our website. Some of the puppies may not be available for adoption. If they are listed as available you are welcome to fill out an application. We are not able to guarantee that puppies are available for adoption when attending the party! Visit our adoption basics page for more information on how to get started.

How much does a puppy party cost?

We require a payment to Secondhand Hounds for the puppy party. Parties start at $500 but the total amount will be quoted to you from our Event Manager at the time of booking. This is due to the investment in the time and resources of our organization to coordinate these private events. You will be invoiced by the SHH team once your party date is confirmed.

Do you have any kind of contract or agreement to secure the day?

Yes! We will have the organizer sign a general puppy party waiver at the time of booking. You will coordinate the date with our Event Manager (subject to availability). Once a date is selected, payment and the waiver must be received to confirm the party.
